Celebrating the alternative fashion and fantasy
of Punk subculture in its many forms…
From the mayhem and mohawks of the original movement to the famous Steampunks of Watch City, Punk is a counterculture phenomenon. Started in the 1970s by rebel youth in the United Kingdom, Punk as a genre has mutated over time and spawned its own series of subcultures from the political to the fantastical. Variants like Goth and Lolita, Glam and Cyberpunk are connected by their DIY attitudes and rejection of social norms even if they appear widely varied on the surface.
Punk rock’s aesthetics and philosophies have also been widely influential on the media, music, games and animated series of today. What’s your preferred style of punk? How has punk culture affected your favorite forms of fashion and technology? Just some of the things we hope to explore in our theme for PopCult Anime Con 2024: PUNK ROCKS!
“Punk rock is the freedom to create, freedom to be successful,
freedom to not be successful, freedom to be who you are.” – Patti Smith
“Punk is about being an individual and going against the grain…
standing up and saying ‘This is who I am’.” – Joey Ramone
“Punk has always been about doing things your own way…
ultimate freedom and a sense of individuality.” – Billie Joe Armstrong
